If your computer suffers from water spilling, you need to take quick action, but don’t worry. It’s easier than you think. Here’s how to fix water damaged laptop in four easy steps.
If you’ve found yourself in the unfortunate situation of having to set a water damage laptop, you’re not alone. Nearly 20% of all laptop owners have had their computers exposed to water spilling, which means that if you didn’t do anything unusual to your laptop, there are lots of people out there who can relate to your problem.
If your laptop allows you to detach its internals
Laptop water damage repair In most cases, a malfunctioning laptop is caused by liquid seeped into its internals. The first step in fixing a computer like that is removing it from its case and carefully drying out any area where water may have accumulated. If your computer allows you to detach its internals, remove those and place them somewhere safe, then use towels or rice if there’s a lot of liquid to soak up as much excess moisture as possible.
Turn off your laptop and make sure it still works once all obvious moisture has gone. Short circuits or other power issues can occur if water spilling your hardware. If it does work after drying out, you can fix any water damaged laptop components with new ones from your manufacturer or another electronics retailer. If your laptop doesn’t allow you to detach its internals. In some cases, a malfunctioning laptop is caused by some liquid that has seeped into its internals, but there’s no way to remove those internals yourself.
If your laptop doesn’t allow you to detach its internal components
Please turn off your laptop and remove its battery. Then, using a soft cloth or towel, dab each of its components dry with a clean cloth or paper towel. If you’re using paper towels, roll them up into small towels before wiping so they absorb more liquid. Once everything is dry, place everything back on your laptop. Next, turn on your computer and plug it in if it has an AC adaptor. If not, it will be operating on just its battery. When your laptop still doesn’t work, you might need to buy a new one.
If it works, you can use rice for about two days to help evaporate any remaining moisture. First, place a large bowl of uncooked rice in your fridge for about two days to ensure no insects are inside. Then, remove all internal parts from your laptop and submerge each piece individually into a bowl of rice.
Leave them there for 24 hours. Then, put everything back together again but leave out any parts that are sensitive to heat, such as hard drives and optical drives. The computer should be on for 48 hours after they’ve dried out after spilling drink.
Could you place it in a bowl of rice overnight?
Then check for visible water damaged laptop such as bad pixels or a warped lid. If there’s no apparent problem, you can still try using a hairdryer on low heat on your external keyboard. However, if that doesn’t work and your computer still doesn’t turn on, it is likely irreparably damaged, and you should contact Apple about a repair or replacement. But at least you tried. Looking at my own experience, I would recommend removing all components from your laptop before submerging it in water.
Most modern laptops have hard drives in addition to their built-in solid-state drives. Since SSDs are non-volatile memory chips that don’t require power to retain data, unlike mechanical hard drives, they will not be affected by getting wet.
You won’t lose any data stored on them, but their protective cases are not waterproof. So, when disassembling a Laptop With SSD, be sure to remove its case first and set it aside before putting anything else in the spilled drink.
Break it down
If your laptop has taken a spill, you must immediately take it apart and dry out each component before turning it on. Please do not attempt to plug in your computer or turn it on. The chances are that spilled drink has shorted out at least one of your components, including your motherboard, CPU, and RAM.
Use your laptop before these parts have dried out, and you may fry them forever. The following steps will help get your computer up and running again quickly. Before starting, make sure you have plenty of clean towels handy and follow our step-by-step guide below. Next, remove all external accessories from your laptop, such as additional hard drives, memory cards, etc.
Use something absorbent to clean it
Take it apart if you can, or remove and replace any damaged components. You might get lucky if your computer is still under warranty. If not, you’ll have to buy replacement parts which shouldn’t be too difficult with a bit of research.
If all else fails and your laptop is beyond repair or at least on its way there, use eBay and Craigslist as a last resort to find a new one in good condition for cheaper than buying a new one from your manufacturer. Or go ahead and buy a new one. It’s been over two years since I bought my laptop, so prices have decreased quite a bit. And if you do decide to invest in a new machine, make sure you protect it by getting insurance and backing up your data regularly.
I used an old t-shirt: You could also try using an old t-shirt or something similar, although I don’t know how well that would work. But if nothing else works, give it a shot. There may be some other options out there, like toothpaste. It doesn’t ask me why, but they probably won’t work very well.
If your laptop cannot be taken apart
Try not to do anything else, as you could cause even more damage, and I would be reluctant to guarantee any outcomes. Instead, pour out as much water as possible from inside your laptop, shake it upside down over a sink or bowl and then let it sit overnight. Next, take out all of your laptop’s components, keyboard hard drive, etc., and put them in a bag with dried rice for 2-3 days. The rice will absorb some moisture.
Put everything back together after letting it dry for 3-4 days at room temperature, and try turning on your computer. Let’s get rid of the belief that electronics can be placed in rice to treat water damage. It’s not. It’s the alcohol that you should be looking for, and not the rice. Liquid damage to electronics is somewhat like pancake batter on the counter. It’s easy to clean up on Sunday morning.
